To address the COVID-19 pandemic, people around the world are working to “flatten the curve.” If you’re staying abreast of the news you know that we are now doing a much better job; but we still need more beds, more personal protective equipment (PPE), more tests, and more staff to care for the sick. In the US, we talk about a national peak and see numbers of both cases and deaths going up day-by-day, but the reality is each zip code is on their own curve and will experience different peaks at different times. Without local and timely forecasts, healthcare providers are unable to anticipate their unique needs and take proactive, data-driven measures to secure supplies and save lives.

In early March, the CEO of CKM Analytix, Pierre Buhler, posted an article on LinkedIn discussing current work undertaken by CKM Analytix to forecast PPE needs. The post received a very rapid response from a healthcare and hospice provider, based in the Northeast with offices across the United States and overseas, whose group leader wanted a better understanding of the services offered by CKM Analytix. This led to a fruitful conversation in mid-March, after which a project and team were quickly assembled and tasked with incredibly important work to help arm the dedicated professionals on the front line in the battle against COVID-19.

To address the unique forecasts needed by healthcare providers, CKM Analytix combines leading epidemiological modeling techniques with the rapidly growing public COVID-19 case data to forecast supply needs at a hyper-local level. They account for both the efficacy and timeliness of each state’s social distancing approaches, using Unacast mobility data to dynamically tune modeling parameters, and update the models in real-time as states change tact and publish new data. Furthermore, CKM Analytix integrates the healthcare provider’s proprietary data to incorporate their clientele and staff’s unique demographic and geographic qualities into its models, so that CKM Analytix is able to provide individualized estimates to allow this healthcare and hospice provider to get ahead of its curve and to feel more confident it is prepared for what is coming its way. As a result, new COVID-19 patients are expected and can be better cared for with the right equipment for all medical personnel.

This collaboration is a living testament to what people and organizations can achieve under dire circumstances just with the desire to help. It is also a logical partnership and application for CKM Analytix, as our expertise is to develop such business-critical models. It’s been amazing to see how many people and organizations are working together to deal with COVID-19, and just as amazing how quickly they come together with limited funding. This has proven to be extremely rewarding work for all of those involved. Unfortunately, there will be more tough times to come, but this healthcare and hospice provider can rest assured it is arming those that need it next and those that need it most.
